Battling Through Weight Loss Breakouts
So, weight loss is kick-ass, however, the breakouts that go with it suck. Working through weight loss breakouts is something I have had to face over the past month. Reinier finds this incredibly amusing as I class a total of four pimples as a breakout, however to me it definitely is! Growing up, I was on Roaccutane twice, hence getting a breakout is a bit of a foreign concept in my adult life. However, after much research to see what the hell is going on, I’ve discovered breaking out in the first few weeks of a healthy lifestyle is a common thing. If you are on your own weight loss journey and are experiencing the same issue, I hope my findings will help save you some time! Because this is honestly f#@*ing annoying…
Possible Causes Of Weight Loss Breakouts
There are a few reasons a person could suffer from breakouts during weight loss. When I say a few there are like hundreds of self-proclaimed reasons floating around on the internet. But I sifted through the pure hokum, to the unlikely, to the ones that made the most logical sense and put together my little list of “Possible Causes Of Weight Loss Breakouts”. Remember, don’t take this as law folks. I ain’t no dermatologist. It’s just the most useful, credible information I found.
Gym Equipment Is Naff
Gym equipment is riddled with other peoples’ sweat and dead cells. Delicious little picture for you isn’t it? But it’s true. Every time you get onto a machine in the gym previously used by another person, you are stepping into their (and everyone who came before them) space. Furthermore, gym stuff is also a breeding ground for germs. Jeez, this really makes a person want to go to the gym, doesn’t it? Nah but for realzies, this is true folks. And these germs are transferred to you every time you use your hand to wipe sweat from your face. If you touch your face after, or during a workout, you are essentially transferring all of the goodness from the machine onto your skin.
So! What To Do About This Issue
There are actually a few things a person can do to rectify this. First and foremost, if you’re freaked out by the equipment, wipe it down before getting on it. And come on people, be considerate and wipe it down once your sweaty ass gets off. It’s the least you can do! At Planet Fitness (where I gym) there is always a bottle of disinfectant and paper towels nearby. So if you’re freaked out by other peoples’ essence getting up in your grill, spritz before getting on.
If that seems too laborious a task, stop touching the face! Like seriously, just staaaaaap! Hard though it may be, fight the urge. If you do nothing but this, it will help you; WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE WASHING YOUR FACE AFTER GYM. Ok next point.
Sitting In Sweaty Clothes Is Naff
If you’re suffering from body breakouts this one’s for you! Hanging out in your gym clothes post a workout is just a bad idea. I get it, #grublife is a real thing. Sometimes, you smash out a monster session, get home and just want to blom on your couch (worse yet, climb straight into bed and sleep the night through). But this is a bad idea for your bod. The longer your body is sweaty and oily, the higher the chances of a break out are. Body breakouts occur commonly in the neck, chest, shoulder and butt region.

GET OUT OF YOU GYM CLOTHES YOU LAZY GRUB! No legit, the faster you can shower, or even change into a fresh pair of clothes, the better for your body.
Wearing Makeup To Gym Is Doff
Yoh yoh yoh this one grates my goat. I honestly don’t get people who rock up to the gym with a full face of makeup at five in the morning. Like how?? Why?? Where do you find the time to wake up BEFORE FIVE and put on a full face only to come and sweat it off?? Ok, rant over.
But we’ve all been there (hopefully not at five am because that means you’re purposefully wearing makeup to the gym and woke up earlier than five to do so). I mean we’ve all been there when we’ve dashed quickly to the gym after work, during lunch or whatever and gone straight into training. Lord knows I have. But this is a terrible, terrible idea.
- Your skin needs to breathe, particularly if you are sweating excessively. Makeup prevents this from happening.
- If you rub your face or wipe it with a towel during a workout, you will be pushing all that foundation straight into your pores. This clogs them. Like, it’s just a bad combo.
- If you work out and sweat your face off like me, you will literally sweat your face off and just look like a tit…
So! What To Do About This Issue
Simply put, clean your face before a workout. Be sure to pack a pack of makeup remover wipes into your gym bag to make sure you’re ready to go. If you’re going first thing in the morning or on a weekend, don’t put makeup on in the first place. The end.
Unclean Personal Gym Stuff Is Naff (And Doff)
Ok so we’ve been through why sitting in dirty clothes is a bad idea (and gross), but there is another thing one should rigorously clean on a regular basis; your sweat towel. A lot of us are in the habit of finishing up a session, tossing our sweat towel into our boot/ gym bag/ whatever and forgetting about it until the next time we pull it out to use it. This is bad bad bad gross yuck poof no. It is full of your old sweat and germs guys! Like no! Then you go rub it all over your face again? No man… come now, people.
So! What To Do About This Issue
Wash your sweat towel. Erry damn day. Finished and kla.
And Finally… What Goes In Must Come Out
This is probably the most plausible (and likely) causes of a healthy living break out. When you make the decision to lead a healthy lifestyle, your body will begin to detox. This means it will expel all the nasties you put into it before you decided to get fit. Your body truly is a magnificent thing. When you detox, your body passes the toxins out in a few various ways for the fastest and best recovery. Namely, you will poop it out, breathe it out, and pass it out through various organs; kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and, da da da daaaah, your skin. This means that all of the impurities you’ve been pumping into your body are now being pushed out through your pores. These get mixed up with the oils your skin naturally excretes and disaster hits. Furthermore, these toxins can also clog your pores.
So! What To Do About This Issue
Unfortunately, the only thing you can do in this situation is to wait it out. However, you should look at it as a good thing! Hard, I know, but when you break out during a detox, it means that your body actually is detoxifying itself.
What I Suspect Caused My Breakout
Look, I’m guna level with you. I am one hundred and fifty percent guilty of all of the above. Buuuuuut, methinks my breakout is stemming from my body detoxing. Well, I hope so anyway. If it doesn’t clear up in a bit I’ll check back in with an update and possible other reasons for it. However, after my research, I’ve honestly been grossed out enough so I shall be implementing all of the above solutions to my workout life going forward. So, was it a detox thang or the result of a grub life? I guess we’ll never know!
